An irresistible portrait of the great French poet Arthur Rimbaud by the wonderful American artist Jim Dine. There's so much character and expression here. This poster was produced for a show at the Aberdeen Art Gallery in 1974.
Dine, who is dyslexic, has written several books of his own poetry. He told Ilka Scobie on artnet.com, "I was a bad boy in school primarily because I couldn’t read well, because I’m dyslexic. And the only thing I could read was poetry 'til I was 22 and I started to read novels. But you know, poetry kept me in the world of language."
Jim Dine was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio, moving to New York in 1959 where he became a pioneer of the Happenings movement together with Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg and Robert Whitman. Closely associated with the development of Pop art in the early 1960s, Dine diverged from the coldness and impersonal nature of Pop by making work about the personal and the quotidian. His work has been celebrated down the decades, with major retrospectives at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Guggenheim in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
